We have decided that as an option we would get married overseas.
Here is the options we have looked at (in order of preference) and what a travel guide has told me (
http://www.barefootluxury.com/barefootluxury-weddings.html)
MALDIVES
"It is not possible to be married in this devoutly Muslim Nation."
Mmm.. well I guess
THAT won't be happening!
MAURITIUS
"For a civil wedding, you must have a minimum 24 hour residency
Valid ten-year passport
Original Birth Certificates
"Once you arrive in Mauritius, you must go to the main Registrar's Office to sign an affidavit to confirm that you are both free to marry. If you have chosen to have a religious wedding, your original documents will be required six weeks before you marry and eight weeks if you are of differing religions."
And trust me - this is looking like the best option.
BALI
"You must be a resident for seven days prior to the wedding
Original Birth Certificates (which must also show the full names of both parents)
Valid ten-year passport
Four passport photos of the couple side by side in the same photo, with the groom on the right side and the bride on the left side will be needed
You must provide the full names, addresses, occupations and religions of both the bride and groom AND their parents
An affidavit stating that both parties are single and free to marry "
Hell yeah!! - I don't have both parents on my birth certificate - guess I'm fucked there. And what's with the photos of us together - who cares what side we're on?? But wait there's more:
"Bali is not the easiest place to get married, as they require all legal paper work to be prepared in Jakarta. You will need to stay overnight in Jakarta and then have all of the legalities taken care of at the British Embassy on a Monday or Tuesday. Once this has been taken care of you will need to be a resident in Bali for a further seven days.
"Weddings may only take place Monday to Friday, excluding Public Holidays
Men must be over 23 and women over 21
Widowed or divorced Catholics are not allowed to marry in Bali
Couples must be of the same religion and must either be Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist."
lol - as if the fact I have an unknown father (according to my birth certificate) has already fucked my chances of marrying in Bali, I think I'll probably be burnt at the stake if I told them my religion (errr - I'm a witch! - ahh don't hurt me, ok,ok I'm Christian!! WHAT!!! I STILL can't get married unless I specify my branch of Christianity - ah well burn me then!).
Well I did't want to risk some terrorist gate-crashing my wedding anyway (sorta got put off by that).
Well off to look at more wedding options again - will keep you up to date.
